A Study on Distribution of Pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae, Especially Salmonella and Shigella from Sewage in Daejeon

Abstract
For recent several years in Korea, the infectious diseases due to pathogenic enterob¡þacteriaceae are prevalent endemically and sporadically.
Therefore, the author attempted to study distribution of them especially Salmonella and Shigella group from sewage in Daejeon during the period from July to August in 1977.
The identification of Salmonella and Shigella were performed by the methods recom¡þmended by Edwards and Ewing.
Also, general bacterial colony was counted by Quebec¢¥s method. Consequently the antibiotic sensitivity test of the isolated strains was performed by means of Ericsson¢¥s disc method using 13 kinds of antibiotics which were widely and commonly used in this country.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. In 25 specimens were found the general bacterial counting from the high of 117.5x 1G8 to the low of 0.2X-1.013 and average of 11.33X108 organisms per ml.
2. The Shigella group was isolated from 1 place (4.0%) among 25 places but the Salmonella group was not isolated.
3. The isolated strain was Shigella boydi.
4. The isolated strain was sensitive to chloramphenicol, erythromycine, kedacillin and oleandomycin, moderate resistant to carbenicillin and minocin and resistant to cephalo3poridine, colistine, cloxacilline, entamycin, kanamycin, methicillin and tetrac¡þycline.
